Documentary Photography: Rodeo

The rodeo is not just a sport, it is a a way of life. The rodeo culture is concentrated in the mid and southwest regions of America. The rodeo consists of many events including bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, and barrell racing.  All these events began in communities when nearby ranches would help one another perform duties like breaking horses to ride and branding cattle. Eventually, they began having competitions between the working cowboys to show off their skills. The people who participate invest their time, money, sweat, tears, and blood into the rodeo. The animals participating are often bred for their specific purpose and owners value their animals and treat them with great respect and care. People embrace rodeo as a passion, maybe even career. The competitors travel on the weekends to the rodeos after working all week on their ranches and in their jobs.Often, entire families will compete in rodeos with the youngest competing in mutt-n-busting' events, which are similar to regular events only using smaller livestock like calves and sheep; all the way up to parents and siblings in the regular events. It is a community, a culture, and a way of life with firm foundations. The rodeo is a timeless and entertaining sport, and a rich and lasting culture in America.
